Is work just about earning a pay cheque?
Or, can work really mean more than this? While, several professionals will tell
you that your work is a way to put bread (and bacon or beans) on the table,
your line of work can be made to work for you. How’s that possible, you may
ask? Here are five ways to find out if the boot fits you right…err, I mean, how
you can find a line of work that suits you the T.
Action
step: Get a notebook and pen for this ‘session’.
What
do you enjoy doing in your leisure? Write down as
many things that come to your mind. Do you enjoy writing, designing clothes for
your friends, cooking gourmet food, painting? Do you enjoy travelling, taking
photographs, teaching underprivileged kids in your neighbourhood?
Action
step: Now against each of the things you’ve listed,
write down how you can turn these into a profession. Example: Enjoy photography
– become a photographer; like teaching – become a teacher, lecturer, work with
Teach India or start an organisation to give free tuitions to poor
neighbourhood kids; love writing – become a journalist, content writer or
author.
What
are you good at? These can be things you have a
flair for or skilled at. Are you good with animals or have a flair for whipping
up quick and healthy meals or great at organizing events?
Action
step: Make a list of all the things you’re good at.
You can ask your friends or family to chip in with their observations, if you
wish. Now, write down jobs that can be created around each of these. Example:
Good at organising events – become an event planner; have a flair for cooking –
become a chef or start a food business.
What
do you gravitate towards? There are professions that
fill us with awe or we like what the job involves. Do you like defence service
officers and their life of adventure? Or, do you like what doctors do?
Action
step: List out all the professions you gravitate
towards.
Now look at your list and check what’s
common among them. Maybe, this exercise throws up your love for design or
cooking or fitness. You may get more than one option.
Once you have a bunch of professions that
you like, research them well and see if you’d like to take one of these up. You
may also want to work with "The Potter's Earth" because this company does – it helps
young people find out what they’re good at and create a career around it.
